Description

Quadrats recorded in the UK Soverign Base Areas of Cyprus under two COST Action (TD1209) Short-Term Scientific Missions. Quadrats focused on stands of non-native species, particularly Acacia saligna and Eucalyptus spp.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 261 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)
261
Occurrence

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

Quadrats were haphazardly located throughout the area of interest. Primarily this was the non-native forest of Eucalyptus, Acacia and Casuarina north of the Akrotiri Salt Lake, although other habitats with non-natives were also surveyed in the south of the peninsula and within the Dhekelia SBA. See http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/516601/ and http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/512985/ for further detail.

Sampling Methods

Haphazardly located quadrats in and around stands of non-native species. GPS locations were taken using field computers with integrated GPS using ArcPad 10.2. Some quadrats initially surveyed in 2015 were resurveyed in 2017, these are prefixed '17' in their eventID identifiers. See also http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/512985/ and http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/516601/.

Study Extent UK Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus (Akrotiri & Dhekelia)
Quality Control Four experienced botanists worked together initially to harmonise identifications. R. Meikle's Flora of Cyprus (1977, 1985) was frequently referred to to check identifications. Genus-level or other ways of indicating uncertainty (e.g. the use of cf.) were used and are included in this dataset using the appropriate Darwin Core fields.

Method step description:

  1. See http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/512985/ and http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/516601/. Spatial data were downloaded from tablet computers using ArcPad 10.2, quadrat data were entered from paper forms. All data were checked using GIS software and manual quality checks of location and taxonomy subsequent to data entry.
